The Schedule
This is a fairly standard exchange, in that each creator is assigned to create one fanwork for one recipient, and any additional works created are considered treats. Anyone can contribute a treat for anyone else. All interactions between creators and recipients are to remain anonymous and go through the mods until Author Reveals.Nominations: Sunday, September 24 - Saturday, October 14
We have a rather long nominations period due to Yuletide Signups happening in the middle. This should allow you two non-Yuletide weekends to nominate your fandoms, characters, relationships, and teams. Anyone can nominate, whether you intend to sign up or not. It is suggested that you only nominate what you want to either offer or request.Nominations Review: Sunday, October 15 - Monday, October 16
Due to the long nominations period, we expect to review and clarify most nominations while nominations are still open. There will be a few extra days to make sure the mods have enough time to review everything.Sign Ups Open: Tuesday, October 17 - Sunday, October 29
You have a little under two weeks, including two weekends, to actually sign up. You must sign up on AO3 to participate, which means you must have an AO3 account. You are able to make 3-8 requests and 3-10 offers.Matching: Monday, October 30 - Monday, November 6
We prefer to hand-match, so this gives us a good week to do it in. If we didn’t enjoy hand-matching so much, we might schedule less time. Additionally, creators without matches will be contacted during this time to ask for more offers. Please keep an eye on your AO3 email address during this window. If you post a separate letter for your creator, please try to have it finished and unlocked by Tuesday, November 7.Assignments Out: Monday, November 6
Assignments will be out by the end of the day on Monday, November 6 (MST), provided all creators have matches. Initial pinch hits will be posted sometime on Monday or Tuesday and assigned on a first come, first serve basis. Initial pinch hits are due at the assignment deadline.Writing Period: Tuesday, November 7 - Saturday, December 9
You’ll have about 5 weeks to create your assignment. If you have any questions for your recipient, please contact the mods and we’ll ferry questions and answers back and forth as needed. In order to preserve anonymity, we ask that you do not contact your recipient directly.Default Deadline: Sunday, December 3
If you know you’re not going to be able to finish your story, this is the Default Deadline. If you default before the default deadline, there are no penalties. If you default after this date or by simply disappearing without submitting a work, you will be banned for the next round.Assignments Due: Saturday, December 9
Assignments are due on this date by midnight (MST), basically. We set it a few minutes early to make it easier to tell the time between timezones. No extensions will be granted, but you are free to post any works you can’t quite finish on time as a treat instead. Due to the nature of AO3, you will be able to edit works up until work is revealed. However, we ask that you do not submit placeholders. All works will be checked to ensure they meet the minimum requirements on the due date deadline. If your work doesn't meet the minimum, you'll be considered in default.Pinch Hit Deadline: Wednesday, December 13
Pinch hits posted after the initial pinch hits are due on this date. This gives a tiny bit of wiggle room to find emergency pinch hitters should any pinch hitters have to default.Work Reveals: Sunday, December 17
Works are revealed! Everyone goes and revels in the wonderful gifts and new works and comments on their gifts. If a recipient receives a DNW or inappropriate or unrequested gift, they should not comment but rather report it to the mods, who will get the recipient a new gift.Author Reveals: Sunday, December 24
Creators are revealed and the collection is no longer anonymous.Rules and FAQs
Nominations
General
- Who can nominate? Anyone with an AO3 account can nominate.
- How many nominations can I make? 10 fandoms, 10 characters and relationships per fandom
- What if I have more nominations than that? You can either ask someone to nominate a few for you or use another AO3 account if you have one.
- Until your nominations are approved or rejected, please keep an eye on the Dreamwidth comm when nominations clarifications posts appear. The mods can’t see who nominated anything and have to ask questions of the nominators on the comm. Anonymous commenting will be enabled.
Fandoms
-
- Please disambiguate TV shows, anime, and cartoons, e.g. Wolverine (Anime), Avengers Assemble (TV), Guardians of the Galaxy (TV), Black Panther (TV), Wolverine: Origin (Marvel Knights) etc.
- Videos: For direct to video titles, please disambiguate with year, e.g. Planet Hulk (2010).
- For a description of AO3’s canonical fandom tags for Marvel, see this link: http://archiveofourown.org/tags/Marvel. You are not required to use these tags if another works better for your nomination.
- Books: You may nominate a collection/omnibus or a series of collections/omnibuses. If the collection contains a specific run, then the mods may, at their discretion, change the fandom tag to the standard run title and series number.
- Comics: If a run shares a name with another run, then please disambiguate, e.g. X-Force (2nd Series). If you don't know the series number, you may use publication year(s) or author/artist. Uncanny X-Men (http://www.uncannyxmen.net/comics/series) has a helpful and very large listing of Marvel comics by run. If there is a subtitle, please include it, e.g. Spider-Man Noir: Eyes without a Face.
- Crossover Fandoms: You may nominate crossover fandoms by using a slash in the fandom name, e.g. Marvel Cinematic Universe/X-Men (Movieverse). You may nominate two subfandoms in a single umbrella fandom as a crossover, e.g. Guardians of the Galaxy/Agents of SHIELD.
- Overlapping Fandoms: Fandom nominations are allowed to overlap. A timeline will frequently contain several runs or movies, etc.
- Crossover Events: You may nominate a crossover event, e.g. Messiah Complex, Age of Apocalypse, Age of Ultron, etc.
- Timelines: If a timeline number is perfectly synonymous within a canonical fandom tag, e.g. Marvel 90214 is synonymous with Marvel Noir, the mods may, at their discretion, standardize to the canonical fandom tag. If a timeline is not perfectly synonymous, e.g. X-Men (Movieverse) contains both Earth-10005 (before Days of Future Past) and Earth-TRN414 (after Days of Future Past), then a timeline by Earth number is an acceptable nomination.
- Comics Timelines: You may nominate the entire timeline or a particular run. You may nominate all related runs within a timeline. For example, Marvel Noir (Earth-90214) contains several runs. You can nominate Marvel Noir or a single Noir title (e.g. Spider-Man Noir or Spider-Man Noir: Eyes Without a Face) or a group of titles, e.g. Spider-Man (Marvel Noir). Please aim for clarity in your nomination name. Use parentheticals liberally, as needed.
- Movies: Marvel (Movies) is no longer the canonical fandom tag containing Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-199999) and X-Men (Movieverse) (Earth-10005 | Earth-TRN414). Please nominate as a crossover, i.e. Marvel Cinematic Universe/X-Men (Movieverse).
- Umbrella/Sub Fandoms: You may nominate umbrella fandoms (e.g. Marvel Cinematic Universe), a specific series of movies [e.g. Thor (Movies)], a specific movie or show [e.g. Thor (2011) or Thor: The Dark World], or a specific Marvel timeline, e.g. Earth-TRN414. Simply aim for clarity, using parentheticals as needed.
Characters
- Please disambiguate characters for their canon. You may use the overall canon or the specific subfandom you’re nominating, e.g. Clint Barton (616), Clint Barton (MCU), Clint Barton (All-New Hawkeye), Clint Barton (Fraction).
- Please disambiguate characters if you want a particular superhero identity, e.g. Steve Rogers | Captain America (616), Bucky Barnes | Captain America (616), Sam Wilson | Captain America (616), Clint Barton | Ronin (616).
- Crossover Characters: If you want to nominate a character in a fandom they did not appear in, then you should nominate them under a crossover fandom, e.g. Marvel Cinematic Universe/Marvel 616, Laura Barton (MCU). You may also nominate them as part of a crossover relationship.
Relationships
-
- Please disambiguate relationships for their canon, e.g. Logan/Ororo Munroe (X-Men Movieverse), Logan/Ororo Monroe (616), Logan/Ororo Munroe (X-Men Animated Series), Logan/Ororo Munroe (X-Men Evolution).
- Crossover Relationships: If you want to nominate a crossover relationship, disambiguate characters with parentheticals and make sure one character is in the nominated fandom, e.g. Marvel Cinematic Universe, Natasha Romanoff (MCU)/Yelena Belova (616)
- Teams: To nominate a team, use the team name and a parenthetical to disambiguate, e.g. Guardians of the Galaxy Team (616), Guardians of the Galaxy Team (MCU), Avengers Team - Original (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Avengers Team - Final (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Hellfire Club - Any (616). Again, aim for clarity and use parentheticals liberally.
Requests
General
- Requests will be visible. Anyone who is signed into AO3 can read everyone’s submitted requests. You can continue editing your requests until signups close.
- You must make a minimum of 3 requests, with a maximum of 8.
- You must request a minimum of 1 character or 1 relationship (or any). You may request up to 10 characters and/or relationships per fandom.
- If your requests do not have a writer, you may end up on the initial pinch hit list. You may also end up on the initial pinch hit list if you are matchable but for some reason, all matchable writers end up matched to someone else.
- The mods will do hand-matching. Please include all your DNWs in your sign up or have your letter completed and unlocked by the end of the signup period. Anything not available for matching will not be taken into account.
Fandoms
- This is a required field. You may request exactly one fandom per request and it must match a fandom in the nominations tagset. If it doesn’t show up in the dropdown, you may copy and paste it from the tagset.
- To request a crossover fandom, e.g. Marvel 616/Marvel Cinematic Universe, simply select the fandom as usual. Crossover fandoms must have been already nominated.
Characters
- This is a required field. You may request:
- 1-10 characters appearing in the tagset. If the character you want doesn’t appear on the dropdown, copy and paste it from the tagset.
- Any Characters, if you’re willing to receive fanworks for any of the characters nominated for this fandom. This does not mean any characters that appear in the fandom.
- No Characters, if you only want to request relationships. Do not select both No Relationships and No Characters.
- To request a crossover character from one canon to appear in another, request a crossover fandom of the originating and target canons, then request the character as usual. Crossover characters must have been already nominated for the crossover fandom.
- If you request multiple characters in combination—e.g. Jean Grey, Scott Summers—your request should be for genfic. If you have additional prompts for shipfic with the two characters paired, you may add them as options, but it would be unfair to those who offered the characters separately (and possibly don’t ship them) to match to someone only wanting shipfic.
Relationships
- Relationships includes both romantic relationship and ensemble team tags.
- This is a required field. You may request:
- 1-10 relationships appearing in the tagset. If the relationships you want doesn’t appear on the dropdown, copy and paste it from the tagset.
- Any Relationships, if you’re willing to receive fanworks for any of the characters nominated for this fandom. This does not mean any relationships that appear in the fandom.
- No Relationships, if you only want to request characters. Do not select both No Relationships and No Characters.
- To request a crossover relationship, request the fandom of one of the characters, the one you want the story set in, then request the crossover relationship under it.
- If the tag is in romantic pairing format, e.g. Jean Grey/Scott Summers, your request should be for shipfic. If you have additional prompts for genfic with the pairing, you may add them as options, but it would be unfair to those who offered the pairing to match to someone only wanting gen.
- If the tag is a team, you may add notes in your optional details about who you prefer to focus on or what version of the roster you want if the tag is ambiguous in any way.
Fanwork Type
- This is a required field. You may request one or more of:
- Fanfic
- Drawn Art
- Graphic Art
- Any
Optional Details/Letter
- The optional details section is where you add the things:
- you don’t want to read, your DNWs.
- you do want to read, your prompts.
- If you include prompts, please include prompts for all requested relationships and/or characters.
- There’s an optional field to link to an external letter if you want more room.
Offers
General
- You must make a minimum of 3 offers and may offer a maximum of 10.
- You must offer a minimum of 1 character or 1 relationship (or any). You may offer up to 10 characters and/or relationships per fandom.
- If your offers do not have a potential recipient, the mod will contact you during matching at your AO3 email address to ask you for additional offers.
- The mods will do hand-matching. Please include any DNWs in your optional details. Note that this field is optional.
Matching
Matching is OR matching. This means you will be matched on any 1 character, team, or relationship request in your requested fandom, and your gift fanwork might not end up containing everyone you included on that request.Creators
- Don’t write or draw your recipient’s DNWs. This is a bannable offense.
- Do not break anonymity with your recipient. This means don’t leave any public way for you to be connected as the creator of your fanwork until creator reveals, not work reveals.
- Don’t post previews of your work in progress unless it’s on a locked post that your recipient definitely does not have access to.
- Don’t message your recipient directly with questions. Direct these to the mods and we will act as a go-between.
- Do get beta help and feedback, if desired, in private.
- Do post your work by the assignment deadline or be a no-show default. No-show defaulters are banned from the next round unless they work with the mods to post a full-length treat before the next round.
- If you need to default, do so by the default deadline by pressing the default button on your AO3 assignment. There are no consequences for defaulting this way. Life happens. Don’t feel badly about it. Enjoy your gift and comment on it anyway.
- For help concerning treats, you may refer to the regular guidelines for assignments. The only difference is minimum requirements are lower and at your discretion, you may want to tag the work Treat.
Recipients
- Do finish and unlock any external letters by the assignments out date.
- Do keep an eye on your AO3 email address inbox for any questions ferried through the mods.
- Do comment on your gift when works are revealed. If your gift contains DNWs, do contact the mods, so we can get your gift revised or replaced.
